Voldemort would have kept his origins as secret as he could. It's possible he was behind the demolition of the orphanage (perhaps it was destroyed one night under suspicious circumstances).

It's also vague exactly what Snape knew about Voldemort. Dumbledore didn't seem to include him much in his dealings with Harry for the first few years Harry was at Hogwarts, although we know Snape was loyal to Dumbledore (or at least, perhaps, commited to destroying Voldemort in revenge for Lily's death) -- sort of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

You could probably go with either situation being plausible -- that Snape knew, somehow, of Voldemort's origins (not necessarily through Dumbledore), or that he had no idea where the Dark Lord came from.
