I use A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions by Bill McBride. I have the fifth edition from 1995 but there is a newer sixth edition from 2001. It is a pocket-sized resource that lists each publisher and their unique identifying marks for first editions. It carries well in a purse.
Happy hunting!

Subject: [Bookroom] Best first edition manuals
Can anyone recommend what is the best guide for telling if a book is a
first edition or not? I'm not a heavy-duty bookseller by any means but
sometimes we sell extra "finds" from library sales, and I don't know
how to tell if something is a first edition. Is there an easy way
without spending a lot of money?
Thanks for any help!
Elizabeth
