about The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and later, The Witch of Clattering
Shaws, both by the late Joan Aiken. I recently got around to reading
through the series of these books that start with the former. I would like
to write a lengthy review of what I read, but for now, let me just say that
I would only recommend the first book, and very few of the ones that follow,
with significant warnings about a few of them because of their gratuitous
violence content, which take the reader by surprise.
I'm bringing this up because we parents must be so careful in what we give
our children to read - just because an author does a superb job with one
book doesn't mean there isn't downright evil lurking beneath the surface. I
am not trying to be a fear-monger, and agree with what so many have said
here before, that we must read and ponder and critique with prayer, wisdom,
knowledge, and the Holy Spirit's gracious help.
I will try to work my way through these Fairy books, and will keep the
Bookroom updated as best I may, God willing.
If any of you can recall why any stories were bad, even if you can't
remember which one(s), that would be helpful to me, letting me know what to
watch for.
Thanks for your response, Michaele, and Michelle.

Subject: Re: [Bookroom] Andrew Lang Fairy Books
I grew up in a non-Christian home reading these, and was enthralled.
I won an award in elementary school for best reader. Until I discovered
Valerie's website, I did not know what other wonderful reading I'd missed
growing up because it wasn't in my school library or found at home, and
thanks to her, my children have a library 3,000 books strong and overtaking
our home to enjoy, and I have found some wonderful new favorites.
I picked up my first copy of the colored fairy books for my own children at
a library sale, my husband read the first tale, or began to, out of the
book, and some sort of he-fellow was taking pleasure or pain in hanging
himself from a tree -
so, my husband trashed the book, and my childhood memories, because he
didn't want that in the house.
I look forward to the rest of the discussion, because I'm still hoping to
weed out the good from the bad - I know I read all I could get my hands on
and that particular image never stuck with me.

Subject: [Bookroom] Andrew Lang Fairy Books
I recently acquired several free ex-library copies of the various "color"
Fairy Books, i.e., The Rose Fairy Book, The Olive Fairy Book, etc.
I would like the opinions of you fellow living book readers, including you,
Valerie, if there isn't something on one of your web sites (going to search
for it next).
