I would only recommend it for "older" children. It deals with a boy having
to live in the wild by himself (after the pilot of the wrecked plane dies).
(He had been trained by his stepfather to do this.) That is where he meets
a rare whooping crane.
We enjoyed it because of seeing how the boy survives and how he cares for
the bird. It is not a happy-all-the-way-through book though. He survives,
the bird survives, and he makes it back to his stepfather. So, the ending
is good.
If this plot intrigues you, you might find it an interesting read.
