[Bookroom] Re: Andrew Lang Fairy Books

We like these books. There have been a few stories we start and don't finish, but most are just good old fashioned fairy tales. One thing that is unique about this series is that they include stories from all over the world, not just European or western cultural tales. After reading the stories we would discuss them: what was good, bad or ugly about the story, what the characters should have done, etc. -- so they can be used to teach a lot of character lessons. Good and evil are generally very clear in these stories, something not always true in many modern tales.

There is another collection of fairy tales we like, edited by Virginia Haviland. They are called Favorite Fairy Tales from... Greece, Poland, Norway, etc. I bought most of the series at our local library sale. They are a little lighter in tone than the Lang versions and are told in simpler language. If the Lang books are a bit too graphic or detailed, I would recommend this series as a good alternative.
